Greetings from Elizabeth

I recently returned from the National Association of Professional Organizer's convention in Denver, CO. It was wonderful!! A great chance for me to visit with other professional organizers, attend workshops to learn new ways to help you better, and see new products at the trade show.

I met the editor of Balance magainze, Yanique Redwood Jones, at conference and she is phenomenal! Just like her magazine! If you haven't subscribed to Balance magazine yet - now is the time. Go to www.findbalance.com and learn more about this exciting magazine to help you keep balance in your life.

I also previewed some exciting new ways to use technology to help us get organized and I will be telling you about those in my next newsletter. One of these is a software that guarantees to save you at least $300 on your taxes by itemizing your donations. You will love it!

If you haven't filled out your profile or would like to update it - please go to the 'update profile' link at the end of the newsletter. The information will help me to better serve you.  Thanks!

Practical Tips To Simplify

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”
- Leonardo DaVinci
  • Pick one area of your life to simplify – finances, home, job, etc. Where do you see the most excess in your life? Start there.
  • Once you pick the area make a list of small changes that you can do immediately. If it’s overspending, get help with a budget. If it’s your home, start going through it and purging what you don’t use. Start with a drawer and then go on to a closet. Really look in your clothes closet and give away what you don’t wear or like.
  • When you’ve had success with some small changes go on to bigger ones – perhaps a cheaper car or paying off credit cards and cutting them up.
  • Resign from organizations whose meetings you dread.
  • Always ask yourself, “Is this going to simplify my life?”
  • Laugh daily. Stop taking life so seriously.
  • Learn how to delegate.
  • Learn to say no. You will achieve nothing if you try to do everything. Be daring and say ‘no’ to all those things you really don’t want to do. Suddenly you will find you have more time for things that matter.
  • When deciding on what to keep or toss ask yourself these questions?
    • Have I used this item in the past year?
    • Is it serving a specific purpose?
    • Do I still like it?
    • Is there a legal reason to keep it?
    • Do I have a place to store it where I’ll find it again?
  • In the words of Henry David Thoreau, “Simplify. Simplify.” The less you have, the harder it is to generate clutter.

Have a FUN To Do List!

I think having a to do list is very important and it should be prioritized by what needs to be done vs. what would be nice to get done. But we also need to have fun and perhaps we should put those things in our to do list, too!

1. Take a sheet, turn it sideways and mark 4 columns.

2. Label the columns: To Do For Myself, To Do with Spouse, To Do with Children/Family, To Do with Friends.

3. Now start brainstorming and only write down things that make you smile.

4. Put your regular To Do list next to the Fun To Do List to help decide what needs to get done each day.

5. Mark off time in you calendar to do at least one activity each week on the Fun To Do List.

6. This will help keep your life balanced.

Want to Get Organized But Don't Know Where to Start?

It takes time and energy to get organized - but so much more time and energy is spent being unorganized! Usually the place to start is in the area that bothers you the most. For a lot of people that is the 'paper pile-up' area! For others it may be a closet or cupboard. Take everything out and go through it all getting rid of as much as possible. Then organize what's lieft in bins, baskets, drawer dividers, file folders, etc.

I help client set up systems that get them organized and keep them organized.
