Life Lessons from the Beach!

Jackie and me

>> Personal Note

I am still feeling on top of the world! I just got back late last night from spending the Labor Day weekend in La Jolla, CA with a group of small business owners. We were led by the amazing Mark LeBlanc (www.smallbusinesssuccess.com) and the weekend was awesome! Not only was there great teaching, bonding, and laughing but we were treated to incredible meals! I feel great!

Every one there was fascinating but I was especially honored to meet Jackie Pflug. You may remember the hijacking in Malta 20 years ago? Jackie was on the plane and was one of the people that was shot and thrown off the plane. Please visit www.JackiePflug.com and watch the 30-minute video as she tells her story. This will change your life! Jackie is the most upbeat, beautiful woman you could ever meet, with a smile that warms you down to your toes!

I was amazed by the beauty of La Jolla. Our hotel was right in the shopping district and just a few blocks from the ocean. It felt so good to walk outside in beautiful weather and just enjoy the scenery. It was also great to eat every meal outside and feel the cool ocean breeze.

Usually in my newsletter I have a number of sections, but this month I just want to focus on what I learned from spending time at the beach.

10 Life Lessons from the Beach!

I was able to spend a couple of hours each day on the beach while I was in La Jolla, CA over Labor Day weekend. What an absolute treat for me! There are two things in nature that really soothe me and they are water and the mountains. I went and sat on the beach, buried my toes in the softest sand that I have ever felt and let myself just enjoy the moment. For those of who you who know me you know what an accomplishment this if for me – just to relax! But of course, I couldn't just sit there and not do anything! As I was watching the different types of people totally enjoying themselves in the water I realized that there are lessons to be learned from the ocean.

The view that gave me these life lessons from the beach

I watched with interest as various groups of people would be standing on the beach enjoying the water as it came on shore covering their feet. As they got comfortable they would get more and more into their conversation and not notice their surroundings. This would be the exact moment that a huge wave would come up far further on shore than normal and totally knock some of the group on their rear ends! Much to their surprise! It was interesting to watch their reactions. Some laughed and took it in stride and others were totally upset that their clothes got wet. Which I found interesting – you are standing in water, after all, what do you expect?!

Lesson #1: Be aware of your surroundings. When we get too comfortable with how we are doing things stuff can happen that can knock us down. Always know what's going on around you.

It was fascinating to watch experienced swimmers swim out into the ocean. As they saw a large wave approach they would do one of two things. They would either anticipate when the wave was going to hit and just at that moment they would swim under the wave or, they would turn their back and let the wave crash around them.

Lesson #2: Always anticipate and know what your next move is going to be. Have your plans in place.

Lesson #3: Know when to turn away. Perhaps this project is best for someone else to do or not have done at all. Or perhaps this project is best done on a day when you are more able to handle it and do it well.

The experienced swimmers had all the right gear: Wet suit, flippers, goggles, snorkel equipment, and some even had a knife wrapped around their calf (no idea what was going on with that).

Lesson #4: Do you have the right equipment to do your job well and safely? Do you have all the right equipment ready to go? In one place so you can easily find it? Can you find what you need? Do you have what you need?

It's really all about timing. As the wave approaches the swimmer braces to either ride the wave or decide to swim under. But she knows exactly when to make the decision.

Lesson #5: How is your timing? Do you know how long your next project is REALLY going to take? Make educated decisions based on past experiences, not on how you feel at the moment.

The swimmers don't go out into the ocean and expect to face the ocean all at once. They take each wave one at a time.

Lesson #6: Don't look at your day as a whole. Break it down into small waves! What's the most important thing to do first, then second, and so on?

Since I am not a swimmer I was amazed at the strength they exhibited as they swam out in to the ocean and faced one huge wave after another. They must have great physical strength and be in great shape.

Lesson #7: How well are you prepared to face all that you do each day? Are you rested, eating well, exercising, etc?

The swimmers seemed to know intuitively which waves to face and swim through and which wave to turn their back on and just ride though.

Lesson #8: Do you know which projects you are ready and willing to take on and be successful? Do you know which projects should be deleted or delegated to someone else? I think if you look at the stress in your life right now it's probably because there is a project in your life that you should have turned your back on.

Take time to sit, relax, and wiggle your toes in the sand! Now, I would be hard pressed in SD to find some sand by an ocean but I do have a great front yard to go out and sit in, wiggle my toes in the grass, and just enjoy where life has taken me and where I am right now.

Lesson #9: Look around right now at all that you have to appreciate and thank at least 3 people in your life today for being supportive and loving you! One of the main reasons I made the decision to attend my conference in La Jolla was the incredible support from my husband. I need to thank him!

I was absolutely amazed at the beauty not only of La Jolla, CA but particularly sitting on the beach and taking in the gorgeous ocean, the cliffs, the seals, sea gulls, boats out on the water, people kayaking together, and the sunsets. Unbelievable!!

Lesson #10: Take time to think, preferably out of your office. Get outside, enjoy all the beauty of nature that we take for granted, and start appreciating all that you have going for you! I'm not kidding – go do this – TODAY!

Please read through these 10 lessons again and just pick one that you are going to do or think about today!
